Tips of Essay Writing for S.S.C., H.S.C. and College Students

Students have to write English essays in their English paper of school or college examinations. For some students, writing a school English essay is like trying to scale a mountain, when the blank paper causes a matching blank in their minds. Moreover students have a short time to complete their essays in exam. Here are some tips to minimise their time and to make their writing effective.

1.       The first step in the process of writing a quality essay doesn't involve much actual writing. At this stage, you select your focus and define your purpose. Remember that a high school English teacher has probably read dozens of essays about your topic, so find a original approach. Think about what your readers need to know about the topic and become an expert through research. Then decide whether your goal is to inform the readers, to persuade them into action or to tell them a story. Write down all your ideas.

2.       Use simple and original language. Do not use Complex sentences while writing your essay in English for S.S.C. or H.S.C. examination. They will only confuse you and you may not write simple and proper essay.

3.       Be persuasive. Like any other kinds of essays, S.S.C. or H.S.C. English essays require a note of Persuasion. For that you should consider the following points into your mind;

Introduction:  Raise the reader’s interest from the very beginning. For that you can quote a saying, a maxim, a proverb, a quotation of a person, an anecdote, a story or a joke. Don’t begin your essay with sentences like "I'm going to tell you" or "This essay is about."

Main Body:   Follow your introduction with body paragraphs for each main point, beginning with your second strongest argument. State the point in the first or second sentence, or topic sentence and follow it with supporting details. Give sufficient evidences and reasonable explanations to support your opinion. Don’t use sentences like "I believe" or

"I think"
Conclusion:     You can conclude your essay with a memorable quotation or statement that encourages your reader to take a desired action. You can also try to add a note of incompleteness to it. Let it be three dots (…) or a rhetorical question at the end of your English essay. The main advantage of these stylistic means is that you do not obtrude your viewpoint but let the reader make a choice. The reader will accept your opinion without hesitation.

4.       Edit your essay until it sounds perfect. Revision is really necessary for good S.S.C. or H.S.C English essays. Besides, the more accurate you are, the better you score.

5.       After editing, there is the time to check for spelling, grammatical, capitalization, punctuation and logical mistakes.

The characteristics of an effective essay.

A good essay is:

Focused:         The essay gets straight to the point and utilizes clear arguments. The writing doesn't deviate from the given topic.

Organized:      The most successful writers don't make up the essay they go along. They consider the structure and the order in which they will present their points before they start to write.

Supported:      Good essays include points that can be supported by facts or by statements within the text that is being analyzed.

Lucid:                 Good essays use proper grammar,spelling and punctuation.
